KUALA LUMPUR: A lorry driver was charged in the sessions court here today with gang robbery involving a parang at an ayurvedic clinic in Bangsar.
P Sangara Lingam, 49, pleaded not guilty after the charge was read before judge Suhaila Haron.
Sangara, together with another person still at large, allegedly robbed 35-year-old Pakistani man Sajid Ahmed Abbasi of a ring while armed with a parang at the Samkkya Integrated Ayurvedic Clinic in Lorong Maarof at about 2pm on March 4.
The charge was framed under Section 395 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 397, which provides for up to 20 years’ imprisonment and whipping upon conviction.
Deputy public prosecutor Nor Aisyah Zanyuin proposed bail of RM10,000. However, counsel Tripatjit Singh requested a lower amount, saying Sangara is the family’s sole breadwinner and supports two children still studying as well as his mother, who suffers from kidney disease.
The court allowed bail of RM7,000 with one surety and ordered Sangara to report to a police station monthly and refrain from disturbing witnesses. It also fixed April 17 for case mention.
