PETALING JAYA: The Alor Gajah magistrates’ court today sentenced a man to nine months in prison for stepping on the Quran and uploading footage of the act online last month.

Bernama reported that magistrate Teoh Shu Yee handed down the sentence on Amir Abdul Malik, 41, after he pleaded guilty.

Amir was charged with desecrating Islam by recording and uploading a video of himself stepping on the Quran with the intent to insult the religion at Kampung Durian Daun, Masjid Tanah, on Feb 28.

The charge, framed under Section 295 of the Penal Code, provides for up to two years’ imprisonment, a fine or both upon conviction.

In delivering her judgment, Teoh said the offence was serious as it touched on Muslim sensitivities and could disrupt harmony in society.

“Insulting any religion, Islam or otherwise, can cause far greater harm than physical injury as it affects the dignity and rights protected under the Federal Constitution,” she said, adding that the offence was particularly concerning as it occurred during Ramadan, a period meant for spiritual reflection and good deeds.

Amir’s jail term will take effect from the date of his arrest on March 15.

The prosecution was conducted by state prosecution director Nahra Dollah, assisted by deputy public prosecutor Wan Abdullah Wan Radzlad, while Amir was represented by lawyer Ishak Kari.
