PETALING JAYA: A septuagenarian lost RM100,000 of his hard-earned savings after falling victim to a fake government aid scam syndicate last week.
Temerloh police chief Nasyim Bahron said the 78-year-old victim was approached by two men at an eatery near Bera, Pahang, last Thursday, Bernama reported.
The victim was offered government assistance by the suspects. To win him over, they handed him RM500, claiming it was financial assistance from the government.
After that, the men offered the victim the opportunity to take part in a lucrative offer in a programme purportedly sponsored by the government.
They promised 20% monthly returns if the elderly man made an upfront payment of RM100,000.
The men then took the victim to a bank, where he withdrew his savings and handed the money over to the two men, who then fled.
Nasyim said police were now looking for the two men.
