PETALING JAYA: The Light Rail Transit 3 (LRT3) service, connecting Shah Alam with surrounding areas, is expected to begin operations on Dec 31.

Transport Minister Loke Siew Fook said the project is in the final phase of testing and commissioning to ensure reliability and safety, Bernama reported.

The opening date is subject to the results of the tests to ensure there are no technical glitches when it finally opens, Loke said when winding up his ministry’s committee-level debate on the Supply (Budget) Bill 2026 in the Dewan Rakyat today.

Loke said in preparation for LRT3 to begin operations, Rapid Rail Sdn Bhd had so far hired 956 workers, including for the operations, technical, engineering and support teams.

Touching on the KLIA Terminal 1 roof leakage incident following heavy rain on Friday, Loke said Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad had been instructed to take stern action against the contractor involved.

“This is extremely disappointing and very embarrassing as it portrays a negative image of the country and it is very difficult to forgive.”

Loke also reiterated his ministry’s firm stance in not compromising on action taken against overloaded vehicles.

“Only with decisiveness and strong political will can we combat this menace which has been going on for decades,” he said.
