Genting Malaysia Bhd emphasised that the charge is a private initiative for a private road situated on private land.
PETALING JAYA: Genting Malaysia Bhd has confirmed it will start charging vehicles entering Jalan Genting Highlands on a date set to be announced soon.
The company said the fee was necessary due to the steep and escalating costs of maintaining the 24km private road, which had been borne solely by the company since the 1960s.
Privately built by Genting Malaysia on mountainous terrain, Jalan Genting Highlands provides safe access to Resorts World Genting and other mountain destinations beyond Genting Malaysia’s properties.
“Heavy usage of Jalan Genting Highlands has caused a tremendous amount of wear and tear, and requires constant maintenance to ensure road user safety,” Bernama reported the company as saying.
Genting Malaysia said the fee is the most sustainable path, based on the “user pays” principle, to defray the cost of upkeep, repairs, maintenance and other unforeseen incidents.
The company emphasised that the charge is a private initiative for a private road situated on private land.
“Genting Malaysia takes the responsibility of maintaining the safety of both the roads and slopes seriously.
“Working on mountainous terrain is challenging, hazardous and expensive, but essential to ensure the safety of the road and slopes for all users,” it said.
Genting Malaysia said it employs teams stationed throughout the area on standby 24/7 for all contingencies, and trained emergency response teams in case of mishaps and accidents.
