PRIME Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today launched the second Madani Mosque project under his administration, a RM75mil initiative in Penang’s Permatang Pauh constituency.
Anwar said RM42mil had been raised from overseas contributors and RM30mil from domestic donors, with fundraising for the remaining amount ongoing.
“If funds fall short, I may use a small amount of government money – but only if necessary,” he said.
The mosque will be constructed on a 2.14-ha site and will serve as a community hub featuring prayer spaces, a library, a multipurpose hall, and accommodation.
Anwar said the project, envisioned more than a decade ago, moved forward following cooperation between the Penang state government, the Islamic Religious Council of Penang, and federal authorities.
The Permatang Pauh mosque follows the first Madani Mosque project near Jalan Masjid India, Kuala Lumpur, which was launched earlier this year.
The Kuala Lumpur mosque, developed on land owned by Jakel Trading Sdn Bhd, is expected to be completed within two years and will accommodate about 2,900 worshippers.
The Kuala Lumpur site, formerly housing the Sri Pathrakaliamman Temple, was approved for development after the temple management agreed to relocate to a new 4,000-sq-ft site about 50m away.
Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa had, in March, confirmed the relocation plan, supported by Kuala Lumpur City Hall. – Nov 8, 2025
