Editor’s Note: The death of Taiwanese influencer Iris Hsieh Yu-hsin which is linked to Malaysian rapper Namewee has been re-classified as a murder investigation by Kuala Lumpur police.
However, Namewee has not been charged with murder. He was arrested at the same hotel and subsequently charged with two drug-related offences: drug possession and drug use to which he pleaded not guilty.
The rapper has publicly denied any involvement in Hsieh’s death or any drug use, claiming he had only been drinking.
ILLICIT drug use and the mysterious death of a Taiwanese influencer known as Nurse Goddess.
That on its own is enough to send media (both mass and social) into a frenzy. Add in that Nurse Goddess was also a popular content creator for adults-only site OnlyFans – the right recipe for the rumour mill goes into overdrive.
Latest headline grabber involves controversial local rapper known as Namewee (born Wee Meng Chee) who has been implicated in the death of the Taiwanese influencer whose real name is Iris Hsieh Yu-hsin.
It is alleged that the hip hop artist was to discuss working on a music video with Hsieh and had found the latter unconscious in a bathtub on Oct 22.
It has been since reported that the 42-year-old musician has tested positive for a variety of narcotics and has been charged with possession and use of drugs.
The Muar-born film producer has denied any involvement in the 31-year-old’s death as well as allegations involving drug use though it has been reported that the duo had spent the night together in the same room.
As expected, online commenters are having a field day, not least because of Namewee’s penchant for controversy. It does look like this time the controversy he finds himself embroiled in goes beyond mere headlines but he could be looking at serious time behind bars.
Highlighting the social media frenzy is a post by content creator Rich Rick Tan on Facebook who advised all and sundry that when illicit substances are involved, it never ends well.
Taking the moral high ground, the poster advised: “stay clean, stay wise and stay away from drugs and the wrong crowd”.
The post – like many others touching on this high-profile case – has generated plenty of feedback with tongues wagging aplenty.
A few commenters were in complete agreement that drugs were a curse that destroyed lives.
One commenter even asked how could the entertainer-cum-rapper deny to be involved in drugs given the cops have claimed traces of narcotics were found in his urine sample.
Another claimed that Namewee made the mistake of not disposing of the evidence before calling for an ambulance! (Editor’s Note: The commenter presumes wrongdoing on Namewee’s part, which let’s be clear, has NOT been proven.)
It has been insinuated that this was an attempt to besmirch Namewee’s reputation, thus bringing an end to his controversial career.
Given that Namewee’s social commentary can be a thorn in the side of the authorities, this does look like a golden opportunity to silence him once and for all, claimed one conspiracy theorist.
Meanwhile, the rapper has strenuously denied any involvement in either the death of the OnlyFans content creator.
He has vehemently denied also using or carrying narcotics of any kind, claiming that the truth will eventually emerge but as many Malaysians know, throw enough mud, some of it will stick.
For now, Namewee will have to deal with all sorts of innuendo, conjecture and half-truths making the rounds online.
Needless to say, the allegations are serious. Whether it spells the end of Namewee’s incendiary career or will he be vindicated remains to be seen. The Malaysian public awaits with bated breath. – Nov 4, 2025
