Renegade blogger Raja Petra dies in UK

PETALING JAYA: Controversial blogger Raja Petra Kamarudin, popularly known as RPK, died in the United Kingdom last night.

He was 74 and leaves behind wife Marina Lee Abdullah, five children and two grandchildren.

The blogger was known for running the Malaysia Today website and publishing a series of controversial commentaries and articles on Malaysian politics.

According to FMT, his death was confirmed by his brother, Raja Idris, this morning.

“It is with great sadness that I am informing you that my loving brother, Raja Petra Kamarudin, has just passed away at 11.26pm UK time on Monday September 9 in Manchester, UK,” he was quoted as saying in a brief text message to the news portal.

Raja Petra had been residing in Manchester for several years.

His controversial writings had often landed him in trouble with the Malaysian authorities, having been detained under the now-defunct Internal Security Act (ISA) twice in 2001 and 2008 respectively.
