PASIR MAS: The construction of a spillway structure on the embankment of the Sungai Golok Integrated River Basin Development (PLSB) project has had a positive impact in reducing the rise in flood water levels in several villages near the vicinity.
Kampung Tersang resident, Mohd Nawi Abdullah, 53, said this follows the installation of 10 culverts which have so far smoothed the outflow of river water from Sungai Lanchang.
“If in past years, whenever it rained heavily then within a week the waters of the Sungai Lanchang and Sungai Golok would start to rise and overflow into our village.
“For now the situaton is not bad as in previous years as the waters from Sungai Lanchang is flowing out well,“ he told Bernama here today.
In July, Bernama reported that the federal government had approved work to install 10 culverts, measuring 5×5 feet in Pengkalan Teluk, a location at the PLSB project, to solve flooding and the problem of stagnant floodwaters.
Meanwhile, Muhammad Yusuf Setafa, 45, from Kampung Bendang Perol said the culverts helped to reduce the misery of residents having to deal with severe flooding since the Sungai Golok PLSB project was implemented.
“As of yesterday, some residents from this village moved to a relief centre but the flood situation is not as bad as before,“ he added.–Bernama
