PETALING JAYA: A teenage girl was rescued after jumping off the Penang Bridge last night.
She had reportedly booked an e-hailing service to reach Sungai Nibong Bus Terminal. However, she asked the driver to stop on the bridge, claiming she felt dizzy and nauseous before she jumped off the bridge, according to Harian Metro.
Hasrul Rizal Ghazali, the operations chief of the Perai Fire and Rescue Department, said they received a distress call about the incident at Kilometre 3.4 on the route to Georgetown at 7:10 pm.
He explained that when the rescue team arrived, the 15-year-old had already been saved by the local fishermen and was sent to Penang Hospital.
“The teenager, who is from Perlis, was using an e-hailing service from the Perai direction and asked the driver to stop on the bridge before she jumped.
“We also found her school uniform with a name tag. She is believed to have used someone else’s individual account for the e-hailing service as the name on the tag did not match hers,” he stated when contacted.
Meanwhile, Hashim Mohd Said, a boat operator, revealed that when they rescued the teenage girl, she was floating and appeared disoriented, rather than struggling.
“My assistant and I promptly lifted the girl on our boat and took her back to the Marine Police Team’s (PPM) jetty before handing her over to the authorities,” he said.
Hashim, a fisherman with 40 years of experience, has previously rescued numerous individuals who jumped off the Penang Bridge.
“Our boat is always ready to assist in rescues when needed, and we also help rescue teams search for bodies of victims lost at sea,” he added.
