PETALING JAYA: Police have arrested two PKR members who allegedly demanded “protection money” from a massage parlour in Wangsa Maju.
Kuala Lumpur police chief Fadil Marsus confirmed the arrests, Malaysiakini reported.
On Friday, Fadil said the case was being investigated under Section 385 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act (CMA) 1998.
Section 385 of the Penal Code covers putting a person in fear of injury to commit extortion, while Section 233 of the CMA involves the improper use of network facilities.
PKR said the men, who are members of the federal territories residents’ representative council, have been asked to resign following the allegations.
Federal territories PKR chairman Azman Abidin said their resignations were necessary to prevent any interference with investigations by the police and the party.
“The bureau reminds all PKR members that being a residents’ representative is a position of public trust that requires complete integrity,” Azman said in a statement on Friday.
Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has denied the men’s claim of affiliation with DBKL.
