Former Umno politician Marina Yusoff dies, aged 84

PETALING JAYA: Marina Yusoff, a prominent woman politician from the 1980s and 1990s, has died at the age of 84.

The former Umno leader passed away at 5.16pm at a private hospital in Kuala Lumpur, Bernama reported.

Her daughter, actress Ida Nerina said Marina breathed her last with family members at her side.

Her body has been taken to the Saidina Umar Al-Khattab Mosque, in Bukit Damansara this morning for prayers before burial at the Bukit Kiara Muslim Cemetery.

Following the 1987 Umno elections and the party’s subsequent deregistration, Marina joined Semangat 46, which Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah formed in 1989.

In 1999, she joined PKR and became vice-president under Wan Azizah Wan Ismail’s leadership of the party.

She contested the Wangsa Maju parliamentary seat in 1999 under PKR’s banner but lost to Barisan Nasional’s Zulhasnan Rafique, who won by a 5,618-vote majority.

Aside from her political exploits, Marina was also involved in the corporate world.
