BUKIT MERTAJAM: Police have recorded statements from 12 individuals in connection with the death of a four-month-old boy at the Seberang Jaya Hospital childcare centre last Monday.

Penang police chief Azizee Ismail said those questioned included the centre’s employees and owner, as well as the infant’s parents.

“We are completing the investigation. So far, 12 individuals have been questioned, and several others will be summoned to ensure a thorough probe,” he told Bernama tonight.

Azizee said two women, both 22, who were detained to assist in the probe, remain under remand.

The case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.

Police received a report from a medical officer at the hospital’s emergency department at 6.10am on Monday, stating that the infant had been confirmed dead at 4.20am after being brought in by a nanny from the centre.

The boy, identified as Hayl Haarith Mohd Syafaeez, was sent to the 24-hour centre while his mother, a nurse at the hospital, was on night shift.

After he was brought in at the emergency department unconscious, medical personnel performed CPR for about an hour before he was pronounced dead.

The welfare department has ordered the childcare centre to temporarily shut down.
