3 men held over assault of council officer in Sandakan

PETALING JAYA: Police have arrested three Filipino nationals, including a 14-year-old, to assist in investigations into the assault of a municipal council enforcement officer at the Batu 8 market area in Sandakan, Sabah, last Friday.

Sandakan police chief George Rakman said the trio admitted during questioning to being involved in the assault, Bernama reported him as saying today.

He said the suspects tested negative for drug use and have been remanded for investigation under Sections 186, 332 and 147 of the Penal Code for obstructing and injuring a public servant, and for rioting.

In the 2.30pm incident on Friday, the officer reprimanded a man believed to be openly selling duty-free cigarettes in the area. An argument then broke out and the officer was attacked by several men.

A video clip of the assault has been widely circulated on social media.
