Rising sea levels force Panama’s island residents to move to mainland

The internal displacement of people because of climate change is one of the biggest issues at the COP30 meeting in Brazil. The United Nations estimates 216 million people could be forced to leave their homes by 2050.

And a key test case has emerged in Panama, where, last year, 300 families of the indigenous Guna people were moved from their island home to a new government-funded community on the mainland. —Nov 12, 2025
