THE cops are famously known to have one another’s back. This can be seen when one of their brethren is accused of a crime with all manner of manoeuvres used to conceal the tainted cop’s identity.

This can be in the form of paper bags covering their faces to being brought to the courts via secret entrances, thus avoiding camera flashes of media photographers.

But such protective camaraderie was sorely absent when suspended police officer Sheila Sharon Steven Kumar was brought to the dock to face the latest charges of obstructing fellow police officers from discharging their duty.

Insp Sheila was brought to the Kuala Lumpur Magistrate’s Court yesterday (Nov 12) before Magistrate Aina Azahra Arifin to be charged with voluntarily obstructing policeman Lance Corporal Malvinderjit Singh Teerath Singh, 37, from carrying out his patrol duty.

Although sharply dressed for her day in court, the lady known as “Inspector Sheila” had to face the ignominy of being led to the dock in handcuffs. That she was manacled like a common criminal seems to suggest that this lone crusader had stepped on one toe too many.

Having shot to fame for her outspoken views and aggressive demeanour, Insp Sheila has garnered plenty of fans online for her fashion sense and statuesque build.

However, her constant run-ins with colleagues have derailed her career, leading to the 37-year-old who co-incidentally was raised by a single father (now) retired senior cop (since her mother passed away 16 years ago) having been suspended since June 23, 2023.

Images of the cuffed copper shared on Malaysian Gazette’s Facebook site has already generated 8.2K likes, 2.6K comments and 185 shares at time of writing, underlining her popularity online.

One commenter wondered aloud just why PDRM (Riyal Malaysia Police) had not yet terminated Insp Sheila from the force given her lengthy suspension.

Another contended that it was not so simple to dismiss a police officer as there must be concrete grounds for the termination. However, this latest court appearance would seem to signal that the wheels are in motion.

Some commenters took exception to the manner in which Insp Sheila was dressed for her day in court. One commenter called her fashion sense “unethical” while another observed that she seemed dressed for a night out clubbing.

Nevertheless, true to the age-old adage that beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder, one impressed observer applauded the fashion-conscious cop’s ability to look glamourous and stylish while in cuffs.

Although Insp Sheila has her fair share of fans and followers, there are those who find her aggressive behaviour over-the-top. Some even questioned her mental stability as she seemed to always be at the centre of some controversy.

The difference in which Insp Sheila was treated compared to the ‘low-profileness’ of an Ipoh cop standing trial for murder after having fatally knocked down a 17-year-old school pupil on a motorcycle with his car was also highlighted.

As previously insinuated by various commenters, perhaps fighting crime in the police force isn’t suited to Insp Sheila.

What is becoming increasingly clear is that her behaviour has upset a few people within the police force, otherwise there would have been no need to insist on the procedural requirement that Insp Shelia be cuffed.

This latest court case may just be the final nail in the coffin of her PDRM career. – Nov 13, 2025
