META has denied allegations that it failed to curb online scams, calling leaked documents suggesting billions in revenue from fraudulent advertisements a selective view of the company’s efforts.

A Meta spokesperson told the New Straits Times that the company actively combats scams, emphasising that such content is unwanted by users, advertisers, and the company itself.

“As scam activity becomes more persistent and sophisticated, so do our efforts,” the spokesperson added, noting that cross-border networks make fraud increasingly complex.

Reuters had reported that Meta projected about 10% of its annual global revenue, around US$16 bil, came from ads linked to scams and banned goods, claiming a surge of fraudulent ads went undetected on Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.

Malaysian authorities are investigating. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said over RM250 mil of revenue could have come from scam and gambling ads in Malaysia.

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission has summoned Meta for clarification and is reviewing takedown requests on its platforms, which far exceed requests submitted to other social media services. —Nov 9, 2025
