MACC arrests ex-deputy director of govt dept in Penang for bribery

PETALING JAYA: A former deputy director with a government department in Penang was arrested for allegedly pocketing RM35,000 in bribes from a contractor in return for awarding a project.

According to a source, the man, in his 50s, was arrested at around 10am today after giving his statement at the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) office in George Town.

“Initial investigations found that the suspect is believed to have committed the offence in 2022. He is suspected of having received the bribe money through bank transfers into his personal account as well as in cash,” the source said.

Penang MACC director S Karunanithy confirmed the arrest when contacted and said that the case is being investigated for accepting bribes under Section 16(a)(B) of the MACC Act 2009.

The suspect was later released on bail.
