RM1 for a giant fresh water prawn; good deal or nothing special?

SEA food has always been a little pricey to those living far away from the coast. Kuala Lumpur, the capital city of Malaysia, happens to be one such location.

Regardless, that doesn’t stop us seafood lovers from indulging once in a while even though it is certain to blow a hole in our wallets.

So it is unsurprising for netizens to go bonkers when they find out that somewhere in Putrajaya, someone is selling Udang Galah or giant freshwater prawns at only RM1 one.

Note that these giant prawns are a major ingredient in many dishes, such as Tom Yam, curry and many others. So at RM1, this is a real boon to the seafood restaurants out there.

According to @KhairulAqmal who made the post, the seller even offered 15 pieces of prawn at just RM10. A good number of netizens pointed out that this was very cheap.

However, @bbyyammmm said people have been offering such prices since a long time ago. Then there was @haiqal21_ remarking that these prawns were not wild and that the taste of their flesh is subpar compared to their wild counterpart.

Also, our online chef and captain, @wakbell_ said these prawns which were bred in a pond need to be cooked immediately or their flesh will become limp. @qxqxmx added that their heads are big but the body is small. It is interesting how he could make such an observation from such a distance.

“Only RM1? Even the prawns have entered the B40 group,” joked @dreamhex01. Prompted by the post, @gxlaticmoon said he once bought a siakap fish in Penang at only 90 cents.

With all that prawny goodness going about for cheap, we already know what’s on the menu tonight, assuming of course, the shop hasn’t sold out its stock yet. —Nov 6, 2025
