PETALING JAYA: Kuala Lumpur police have reclassified the death of a foreign national at a prominent hotel in the capital last month as a murder.
“Further investigations are being carried out,” Kuala Lumpur police chief Fadil Marsus said in a statement.
The case was previously classified as a sudden death.
The victim, whom media reports had linked to controversial singer Namewee, was found dead at a hotel in the capital on Oct 22.
While police did not name anyone in its statement, media reports had previously identified the victim as Hsieh Yu-hsin, a Taiwanese influencer.
Hsieh, also known as Iris, according to Sin Chew Daily, had reportedly met with Namewee, whose real name is Wee Meng Chee, at the hotel to discuss filming a video together.
The report later stated that Wee had found her dead in the bathtub.
The reclassification of the case comes a day after Fadil confirmed that Wee was arrested and charged with drug possession last month.
Wee was nabbed by police on Oct 22 at the hotel, where authorities discovered nine blue pills, suspected to be ecstasy, in the room.
He later tested positive for amphetamine, methamphetamine, ketamine and THC.
Apart from possession, Wee was also charged with consuming drugs. He claimed trial to both charges.
