Security guard dies, assault case reclassified as murder

PETALING JAYA: Police have reclassified the assault of a 54-year-old security guard outside a condominium block on Jalan Ipoh, Kuala Lumpur, on Oct 13 as murder.

Sentul police chief Ahmad Sukarno Zahari said the investigation into the case has been updated following the victim’s death.

He said the suspect – a 32-year-old man believed to be a tenant of a condominium unit – had been released on police bail earlier pending further instructions from the deputy public prosecutor.

“This case was initially investigated under Section 324 of the Penal Code for intentionally causing injury with a weapon.

“After the victim was confirmed dead, the case classification was revised (to Section 302 for murder),” Bernama reported him as saying at the Sentul police headquarters today.

Sukarno said police had seized a lighter resembling a pistol from the suspect.

He said the security guard had previously filed a police report stating that the suspect had pointed an object resembling a pistol at him.

The victim, whom he identified as R Chandran, was attacked and injured while on duty at the checkpoint at about 5am.

It was reported that Chandran was slapped, punched and stomped on after a man’s request to be accompanied to another block was rejected because he could not leave his post.

The victim, who suffered soft tissue injuries to his head, received treatment at Kuala Lumpur Hospital before returning home.

However, he reportedly fell unconscious at his home on the same night and was later confirmed dead from a heart attack.
