KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia prepares to host the 47th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits from October 26 to 28 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.
More than 30 heads of state and government will attend the largest gathering of regional and world leaders in Southeast Asia.
Key dialogue partners include the United States, China, Japan, South Korea, India, Australia, New Zealand and Canada.
Discussions will focus on regional peace, economic resilience and inclusive growth under Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship theme of ‘Inclusivity and Sustainability’.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim described the summit as one of the largest in ASEAN’s history.
He said Malaysia is committed to ensuring discussions yield tangible outcomes and strengthen global partnerships.
US President Donald Trump and Chinese Premier Li Qiang are among the high-profile arrivals expected on October 26.
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa will attend as ASEAN’s new sectoral dialogue partners.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to arrive on October 25 for the summit.
Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said 84 outcome documents are expected to be issued.
These documents reflect Malaysia’s commitment to advancing ASEAN’s shared vision towards ASEAN 2045.
A new approach introduced this year features joint meetings between foreign ministers and economic ministers for policy coordination.
The summit will formally admit Timor-Leste as ASEAN’s 11th member state, symbolising Southeast Asia’s continued unity and expansion.
A total of 2,854 media personnel from 290 agencies have registered to cover the historic event.
Preparatory meetings will convene from October 23 to 25, including the Meeting of the Committee of Permanent Representatives to ASEAN.
The main summit opens on October 26 with an opening ceremony and ASEAN Prize Presentation.
Key events include the Signing of the Declaration on Timor-Leste and the handover ceremony for the Second Protocol to Amend the ASEAN Trade in Goods Agreement.
The summit will feature the ASEAN Plus Three Summit, East Asia Summit, and ASEAN+1 engagements with major partners including the United Nations.
The gathering concludes on October 28 with the closing ceremony and handover of ASEAN Chairmanship to the Philippines. – Bernama
