Mercedes-AMG SL63S E Performance launched in Malaysia – PHEV, 816 PS, 1,420 Nm, from RM2.2 million

We’ve already got the RM1 million SL43 and the RM1.9 million SL63 4Matic+; now Malaysia welcomes the RM2,168,888 Mercedes-AMG SL63S E Performance – the ultimate R232 SL available globally.

The most powerful SL ever is a plug-in hybrid – it carries a hand-built 612 PS/850 Nm 4.0 litre twin-turbo V8, a 204 PS/320 Nm rear-mounted electric motor, a two-speed transmission, all-wheel drive and a mechanical rear limited-slip diff. Altogether, it delivers a jaw-dropping 816 PS and 1,420 Nm of torque.

The century sprint is done in a neck-snapping 2.9 seconds and it tops out at 317 km/h. The rear-mounted, direct-cooled (maintains temperature at around 45 degrees) 6.1 kWh 400V battery, topped up via a 3.7 kW AC on-board charger, allows 13 km of EV-only range.

This generation SL is the first since the R129 to have four seats and a soft top, which opens in 15 seconds and is operable up to 60 km/h. You get AMG Active Ride Control with active roll stabilisation, rear-axle steering, the AMG Night Package, the AMG Aerodynamics Package with additional flics, and the AMG Exterior Carbon Fibre Package.

Peeking out between the 10 twin spokes of the 21-inch forged alloys are bronze-coloured six-piston fixed callipers at the front, one-piston floating callipers at the rear, 420 x 40 mm front discs and 380 x 32 mm rear discs. These carbon ceramic brake discs are bigger than those on AMG’s ICE models.

An active aerodynamic element, hidden in the underbody in front of the engine, contributes to balanced driving behaviour. This carbon profile is an exclusive AMG development and patent-protected, reacting to the position of the AMG driving programmes and automatically extending downwards by around 40 mm at 80 km/h. Also, an extendable rear spoiler adopts five positions from 80 km/h onwards to either optimise stability or cut drag.

You can choose from Electric, Battery Hold, Comfort, Smoothness, Sport, Sport+, Race and Individual drive modes – in all modes except Smoothness, four regen levels are selectable, and in the highest setting, one-pedal driving is possible. Over 100 kW of power can be fed back into the battery.

Interior highlights include AMG Performance seats with integrated headrests, Airscarf, three massage programmes and seat back vents, plus Manufaktur Nappa leather upholstery with diamond quilting. Also, the Energizing Package Plus combines seating functions and mood lighting to create relaxing comfort programmes, and the MBUX system incorporates various AMG and hybrid-specific displays and functions.

Also launched at the same event is the RM1.9 million Mercedes-AMG GT63 4Matic+ Coupe – more on that non-hybrid bruiser here.
