At least 112 people killed in devastating floods hitting Nepal – Reports

MOSCOW: At least 112 people have died and 68 have gone missing as a result of devastating floods in Nepal, caused by the strongest rains in 54 years, Sputnik reported, quoting Nepalese newspaper The Kathmandu Post report on Sunday.

As of Saturday evening, the country’s Interior Ministry officially confirmed 99 deaths, 68 people missing and 100 injured.

The floods and landslides have disrupted many highways and roads across the country, leaving hundreds of houses and bridges buried or swept away, and displacing hundreds of families, the newspaper reported, adding that thousands of passengers were stuck in different places due to road disruption.

The authorities are continuing search and rescue operations, which involve over 20,000 security service officers across the country. They believe there might be more victims in the regions affected by the disaster.

On Saturday, the country’s Hydrology and Meteorology Department said Kathmandu Valley received 240 millimetres of rain in 24 hours which was the highest rainfall recorded in the capital since 1970.
