PETALING JAYA: Bukit Aman’s integrity and standards compliance department (JIPS) has confirmed that it is handling the inquiry into the alleged assault of a disabled e-hailing driver, and says the probe is still at an early stage.

JIPS director Azri Ahmad said they were looking into the disciplinary aspects, particularly in terms of the SOPs for police escorts of VIPs.

“The victim was summoned to Bukit Aman at 11am today to assist in the disciplinary investigation. He was accompanied by lawyers and an interpreter.

“JIPS will determine if there was any breach of SOP or misconduct (involving the officer on duty). The investigation is still at an early stage and JIPS will summon more witnesses to complete the investigation,” Azri said in a statement.

He added that the department would conduct its probe transparently and without any compromise.

Earlier, lawyer N Surendran said police were also looking into the withdrawal of victim Ong Ing Keong’s first police report and the so-called settlement.

Ong spent about four hours giving his statement to the police.

Surendran said no satisfactory explanation had been given for the incident, and the evidence was sufficient to prove that an assault had occurred.

Ong was allegedly assaulted by a police escort for a VIP last week while waiting to pick up passengers at a hotel in Kuala Lumpur. Bukit Aman initially said police were investigating the escort for voluntarily causing hurt.
