I look forward to receiving Tajuddin’s payment, says Khalid’s lawyer

Lawyer SN Nair said he had yet to receive the payment of RM60,000 in costs from former Pasir Salak MP Tajuddin Abdul Rahman or his lawyer Hasnal Rezua Merican.

PETALING JAYA: SN Nair, the lawyer representing former Shah Alam MP Khalid Samad, said that he was looking forward to receiving former Pasir Salak MP Tajuddin Abdul Rahman’s payment of RM60,000 in costs as ordered by the Court of Appeal in relation to the latter’s defamation suit against his client.

Nair said this in response to a Malaysiakini report today that Tajuddin had agreed to pay the amount, with a photo of him handing a cheque to his lawyer Hasnal Rezua Merican.

Tajuddin reportedly said he delayed the payment as he was not happy with the court’s ruling that he had to settle the RM60,000 costs.

The Kuala Lumpur High Court last year dismissed his defamation suit against the former minister with no cost imposed on any party. However, the Court of Appeal subsequently ordered him to pay RM60,000 in costs to Khalid.

“I agree with the order of the court (of appeal), the most powerful court. I will still pay, but I feel slightly hurt by the decision,” Malaysiakini quoted him as saying.

Nair told FMT today he had yet to hear anything from Tajuddin’s lawyer Hasnal on the matter.

The Court of Appeal’s order for Tajuddin to pay costs also includes RM60,000 to KiniTV Sdn Bhd.

On Oct 19 last year, the appellate court ordered Tajuddin to pay Khalid the costs after an appeal by Khalid and KiniTV against the lack of costs ordered in the High Court’s dismissal of Tajuddin’s defamation suit.

Lawyer Wong Guo Jin of law firm SN Nair & Partners told FMT yesterday that despite the formal demands made, Tajuddin had refused to pay the sum.

“Khalid (then) obtained a writ of seizure and sale from the Kuala Lumpur High Court on Apr 16, and attempted to execute the writ yesterday via the high court’s bailiff at Tajuddin’s house in Bukit Damansara,” Wong said.

Wong added that bailiff Marzuki Mohamad’s attempt was unsuccessful as he was denied entry into Tajuddin’s house.

He said Khalid would make another ex parte application with the court for another attempt to execute the writ.
