UTM’S AI faculty to spearhead Malaysia’s AI growth – Higher Education DG

KUALA LUMPUR: Universiti Teknologi Malaysia’s (UTM) proposed Faculty of Artificial Intelligence (AI) will spearhead Malaysia’s AI growth, said Higher Education director-general Prof Dr Azlinda Azman.

She said the faculty, which will be established with a RM20 million budget next year, will become a centre of expertise and knowledge sharing for all public and private universities in the country.

She said this was part of the government’s initiative to accelerate the growth of AI, in line with the global digital movement.

“UTM will be working with both government and private universities and whoever (industry players) that has expertise in AI will come together to expand for the country’s needs.

“We want someone to lead and we see UTM has the capability to come up with an AI faculty very fast,“ she told Bernama after attending Huawei Malaysia’s ICT Academy summit here today.

According to Azlinda, the AI faculty is one of the ways for the Ministry of Higher Education to connect and collaborate with industry players as well as public and private universities.

She said all universities should share their best practices and knowledge with one another to strengthen the education sector.

“For example, in AI both the private and public universities are very important and universities should learn from one another as each has different strengths,” she said.

Meanwhile, commenting on the summit, Azlinda said Huawei has done a very good job in helping educators to learn more about Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs)

“If our educators have relevant tools in line with technological advancement, then they can roll it out to students, the younger generations. Otherwise, we will be losing in terms of technological change for the country,“ she said. – Bernama
