KUALA LUMPUR (April 18): Malaysia is still experiencing the Omicron wave but the situation is under control, Health Minister Dr Zaliha Mustafa has said of the surge in Covid-19 infections over the past few weeks.
“In the last few weeks, there has been an increase in the number of Covid-19 cases reported across the country, but it’s still under control and the death toll is still low,” she said at a press conference after attending a townhall meeting on a Health White Paper.
Zaliha said that the reported deaths were mainly among those with comorbidities (chronic complications) and who were over the age of 60.
“The variant that we see so far is still Omicron, although the spread is quite fast, but it is still under control and the symptoms are still not severe,” she said.
Among the Omicron sub-variants (also known as XBB) recorded in Malaysia thus far are XBB 1.5, 1.6 and 1.9.
Ahead of Hari Raya Aidilfitri, MOH has advised the public to wear a face mask, especially if they develop any Covid-19 symptoms such as flu or cough.
