PETALING JAYA: It will be “quite impossible” for Malaysia to host Formula 1 (F1) races in Sepang again because of the high costs the grand prix would incur, says youth and sports minister Hannah Yeoh.
According to Bernama, Yeoh said her ministry will instead priorities giving Sepang International Circuit (SIC) RM20 million in funds to upgrade the circuit’s infrastructure.
She said this is aimed at attracting more organisers to hold local and international events at the circuit.
Malaysia had hosted F1 races since 1999. It was last held in 2017 after Putrajaya decided against hosting them anymore due to a decline in returns.
Yeoh also said her ministry was committed to push for a 25% reduction in entertainment tax on tickets for the Malaysian Grand Prix Motorcycle World Championship (MotoGP), which will be held from Nov 10 to 12.
“The price of MotoGP tickets is expensive, so we will fight (for a reduction in entertainment tax),” she said.
